As any good doctor knows, high quality medical education does not come cheap. One of the single biggest budgets within healthcare is rightly allocated to teaching hospitals, and post-med school training although often overlooked is just as important as the early days.

This is where Essentially Medical steps in. They coordinate and manage a full in-house virtual medical education programme for GPs and nurses in the comfort of their own surgeries.

The practice chooses the specialities, and the relevant experts come to them. These meetings allow GPs to receive bespoke education and training from relevant consultants on a wide range of subjects. The aim is to ensure GPs have the latest information at their fingertips.

Evelyn Diamond founded the company in 2004 explained: “It’s a simple idea, but unique and extremely cost-effective.

“We organise these meetings free-of-charge at a time to suit the GP and the consultant.

Usually, these take place during the lunch hour or early evening.

“What’s special about the service that we offer is that it makes the best use of time. We all know that GPs and consultants are extremely busy people and that they rarely have time to meet, so we aim to maximise the use of their time by ensuring that the GPs get the training they want, when they want it and literally bring it to them at their place of work.

The set-up is flexible which allows third-party pharmaceutical companies or medical equipment companies to get involved where relevant. These company representatives can sponsor meetings all of which follow the guidelines set out in the ABPI Code of Practice.

We have proved that we know how to manage the critical primary/secondary care interface, to bring the right people together and are now successfully managing several medical education events a week.
